As a result of their work, Forbes ranked The Chainsmokers at #2 in their list of the highest-paid DJs in the world, earning more than acts like Steve Aoki, David Guetta, and Diplo. The duo consisting of Andrew Taggart (age 33) and Alex Pall (age 28) earned a total of $45.5 million in 2018 from their music and touring. The Chainsmokers are in the final stretch of their three-year deal with Wynn Nightlife, and are collecting checks in the mid six-figures. Memories…Do Not Open, their debut album, reached platinum status and was on top of the Billboard album charts. Alex Pall notes that he is curious to see what happens next.
A bit over two years after the release of “Closer” which featured Halsey, the single has been certified diamond in the United States as a result of shipments of more than 10 million units. The song became the biggest hit of both Halsey and The Chainsmokers. The news came from Instagram, after the two acts posted photos of their new plaques which showed that they now have a diamond single to their resume. The song was certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2017, when “Closer” reached a seven-time platinum status. When it was released in the summer of 2016, the single reached the top of the Hot 100 chart, and it stayed at the top for longer than one could have predicted, and eventually was listed among the 4th longest-running #1 hits in the history of the United States.
“Closer” also garnered several awards and nominations, earning the first Grammy nomination for both Halsey and The Chainsmokers. Prior to the single’s release, The Chainsmokers already had a number of top 10 hits to their name, but the song propelled them to become an even bigger name in the music industry. Since the release of the single, the act released their debut album, and a new EP titled “Sick Boy”, along with a handful of new singles. The duo continues to blur the lines between genres, being influenced by genres such as pop music, indie, dance and hip-hop.
